"St. Hans Bonfire by Jølster Lake" by Nicolai Aastrup
The name St. Hans originates from the well-known biblical figure John, born June 24. Up until 1770 St. Hans was a public holiday in Norway. However, it is the night before St. John’s Eve that Norwegians gather to celebrate.
Free day. Rent a boat for fishing, go for a walk, rent a bike, stop in at the local store, visit with the locals, explore the hamlet of Reine or just enjoy the scenery and relax.

Swedish Midsummer
City tour in Stockholm that includes Drottningholm Palace (outside only), Gamle Stan (Old Town), Wasa ship and changing of the guard at the Royal Palace. Afternoon for shopping and free time. You have time to take in other sights on your own, like the Nobel Museum.
We recommend the evening at “Skansen” the local entertainment area. We will travel there together, but spend the evening as we please. There are many places to enjoy for meals.

|
Midsummer Eve is celebrated in the countryside as always and on the day before, everyone leaves town, everything closes and the streets are suddenly spookily deserted. Swedes like the world to be well-ordered, so Midsummer Eve is always a Friday. People often begin the day by picking flowers and making wreaths to place on the maypole, which is a key component in the celebrations.
The maypole is raised in an open spot and traditional ring-dances ensue, to the delight of the children and some of the adults.
|
Every year, the open-air museum whips up an old-fashioned Midsummer celebration, complete with national costumes and singing and dancing around the maypole. Families come with picnic baskets and the atmosphere is friendly and laid-back.
